NIGHTSHELTER MEETING 11TH APRIL

If we haven’t met, my name is Phil Morrton, and I work for Derby City Mission, we have been working mainly in the city of Derby for almost the last 30 years serving the poor and vulnerable of our city.  5 years ago we responded to a need in Derby and working with the churches in Derby we opened Derby Churches Nightshelter offering an emergency nightshelter for 4 months from 1st Dec-31st March and looking to support and help people find a more permanent solution to their situation.  As a result of the nightshelter mainly we have been asked to look at some of the issues around the county about homelessness.  Outside of Derby the main area of rough sleeping is Chesterfield and so after quite a few conversations in the town with various people involved in this work, it is felt a nightshelter would benefit the town.  So I am proposing to come and bring our 5 years of experience to help establish a nightshelter in Chesterfield.

I know it may appear odd to being starting this conversation in Spring (although snow is forecast)  but if we want this to be well, and done right the conversation needs to start now.  With this in mind I would like to invite you to a consultation/presentation

I have decided to go ahead with two meetings.  The two meetings will be exactly the same so please don’t feel you need to come to both (unless you are super keen)  So the two meetings will be as follows:

Wed 11th April 2pm at Central Methodist Church, Saltergate, Chesterfield. S40 1UH.
Wed 11th April 7.30pm at Central Methodist Church, Saltergate, Chesterfield. S40 1UH.

We will use the Cornerstone lounge, and access is via the pedestrian door half way down the right hand side of the building

There is a public car park on the large roundabout nearby.

The plan at this meeting will be to share the vision for what we would like to see in Chesterfield, and to provide a specification of what we are looking for in potential venues, and what resource of finance, volunteers, staff, item donations we may require to deliver the shelter.  The plan is to aim for a 7 night a week shelter for a 4 month period from the beginning of December through to the end of March.  The meeting is an open invitation to anyone who is interested in the shelter, but will have a particular focus at this stage on the venue finding.  Please spread the word, and it would be great at this stage to get representation at the meetings from as many churches as possible to see if they could be a possible venue, but also how else churches may get involved in supporting the shelter, in some of the ways mentioned above.  So it maybe best to send someone with a leadership role in the church who is able to go back and help make a decision to be made.

If you have any questions prior to the 11th please come back to me

Many Thanks, and look forward to meeting you on the 11th
